Did you know that rainbow can be formed at night as well ?
Yes! the rainbows formed at night are known as Lunar rainbows or Moonbows.
We know that rainbows are formed due to the interaction of sunlight with rainwater droplets. But at night, there is no sunlight, right ? Well, in reality, it is the white light that is necessary for the formation of rainbows and sunlight is nothing but white light. We receive natural white light at night as well from the Moon ! When the moon's lights refracts and reflects through water droplets in the air, it splits into its constituent colors and this forms the Moonbow !
But why aren't we able to spot moonbows like rainbows ?
It is because the Moon's light is actually a reflection of the Sun's light and hence has a less intensity. Thus, unlike rainbows, moonbows are faint and whitish.
Hope! you got something new to learn.
Very interesting
