The Legend knew that, most of the Indian Students couldn't afford both online and offline courses. In 2016, Alakh Pandey, driven by a deep passion for physics and a burning desire to make quality education accessible, founded Physics Wallah. With a humble beginning as a YouTube channel, Physics Wallah set out on a mission to empower students across India with free physics and chemistry lectures.

Alakh Pandey, a charismatic and relatable teacher, quickly gained a loyal following. His ability to simplify complex concepts and connect with students on a personal level set Physics Wallah apart. 1. Most of the EdTech giants like Vedantu, Unacademy, Byjus etc. targeted the premium strata of the society . They offered online courses in the price range of 35K-50K.
2. The content available in YouTube is not just enough for preparing for competitive exams like JEE or NEET. Apart from this, student also need after class services like regular tests, notes, DPPs, doubt solving classes.
3. Most of the EdTech startups were playing the funding game and running behind valuation. None of them really cared about the students.

He saw this gap in the market and decided to close this gap by offering courses in the price range of 3500/- to 4000/-. In 2020, Physics Wallah recognized the need to provide a comprehensive learning experience beyond YouTube. Mr Prateek Maheshwari joined Alakh Pandey as the co-founder of the company. The company launched its own ed-tech app, aiming to offer a more personalized and interactive platform for students by maintaining the quality and affordability. The app crashed on the launch itself due to heavy traffic. But, the tech team was able to sort out the problem within 10 hard days and maintained smooth learning experience. Within 1 week, it reached 300K+ downloads milestone. As of now, the app gained traction, garnering over 5 million downloads. The main reason behind this exponential growth is affordability and quality.


The Physics Wallah app became a haven for students seeking quality education. It featured a vast library of video lectures, practice quizzes, and interactive discussions. This technology-driven approach allowed students to learn at their own pace, revisit concepts, and engage with fellow learners. The app's success further solidified Physics Wallah's position as a trusted name in the ed-tech space. In 2021, PW launched first of its kind, PW Pathshala - a hybrid (Online + Offline) classroom program.

In June 2022, after the pandemic, when situation got normalized, they launched- PW Vidyapeeth pure offline class program for JEE, NEET & Foundation classes.


Chapter 4: Scaling New Heights

As Physics Wallah's popularity continued to soar, the company faced the challenge of maintaining its charm and affordable course offerings while expanding its reach. Stayed bootstrapped for six years and to fuel its growth, Physics Wallah secured substantial venture capital funding, propelling it into the league of unicorn startups in June 2022. Physics Wallah became the 101st unicorn of the country

With strategic planning and a laser focus on its mission, Physics Wallah successfully managed its expansion. The company grew exponentially, generating an impressive revenue of INR 233 crore in the fiscal year 2022. Apart from JEE & NEET, they have also made entry into Educational Domains like - GATE, SSC, CUET, PSC, UPSC, NDA, IIT-JAM, CSIR-NET and many more. Also, they have primary focus on delivering courses in various local languages of India.

This year, PW launched its PW-MedEd platform - one stop learning solution for NEET-PG and FMGE aspirants. The brand launched dedicated Med-Ed app and website. MedEd has a team of 19 expert faculties and 300 doctors practicing across various healthcare institutions.

Also, these lead them to strengthen themselves in publishing books & modules for various competitive exams.


The integration of PrepOnline's YouTube channel, boasting
400,000 subscribers, enhanced Physics Wallah's brand visibility. Vivek Gaur, the founder of PrepOnline, joined the company as the Chief Growth Officer(CGO), bringing his expertise and insights to fuel further growth.

Last year, OnlyIAS merged with PW in month of October. And, Sumit Rewri became the CEO of this newly added vertical of Physics Wallah. PW-OnlyIAS aims to empower UPSC aspirants across the nation. This merger lead to integration of 1.33+ Million subscribers of OnlyIAS with the brand, enhancing the brand visibility.
